Anatomy of a Bank Scam Email

5 Ways To Spot A Fraud

Signs of Scams

  1. Notice the name in the "From:" field. Looks like a customer id #, not a bank officer's email address.

  2. The name in the "To:" field isn't me! I'm not even a customer of this bank. Banks are more careful and have better records of their customers

  3. There is a link provided which you are instructed to click, but the entire scam email is, in fact, a .gif image file which is linked to an external site. Never click a link like this in an email

  4. This nonsense text at the bottom of this fake email was the same color as the background, making it invisible until the text is selected. This is meant to mimic content of a real email so as to fool spam guards. If you use Firefox, you can press Ctrl+A to hi-lite all the text on a webpage to check for hidden text.

  5. Finally, this scam email isn't even signed. This should be the next button you click...Delete All Scam Emails!
